David John Bewick

  General Notes:

David was born in Wales in 1965. His family emigrated to Australia in 1971, however, he returned to the UK in 1978 to attend Monkton Combe School, near Bath, joining the Royal Navy in 1985.

Appointed as Officer of the Watch to HMS ARGONAUT in 1987 and Navigator to HMS SIRIUS in 1990, the majority of his early career was spent in the North Atlantic on Anti-Submarine patrols with brief deployments to North America and the Mediterranean. He then served ashore as an Area Careers Liaison Officer in the Midlands before qualifying as Principle Warfare Officer (Underwater) in 1996. David's warfare jobs have included 2 months in the Adriatic in HMS BRAZEN, 6 months in HMS MARLBOROUGH and, after completing the Force Anti-Submarine Warfare course, 12 months in HMS MONMOUTH as Operations Officer. This last appointment included the first Royal Naval deployment to the West African littoral for several decades. He commanded HMS BRIDPORT from 1998 to 2000, with deployments to the Balticand Arabian Gulf, attending the Advanced Command and Staff Course the following year, achieving a Master of Arts degree in Defence Studies from King's College London as part of his studies. PromotedCommander in 2001 he commanded of the Third Mine Countermeasures Squadron for two years, spending a great deal of time deployed in the Baltic, amongst other short deployments to the far east and northern Russia. He then spent 2 ½ years working in the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Whitehall, looking at future Command and Control issues before taking up a more operational tour in 2006, at the UK's Joint Force Headquarters, responsible for the planning of current operations.

David lives with his wife, Clare, in Belper (Derbyshire). Both are keen Sub Aqua divers who spend much of their time diving in UK waters and overseas, as well as teaching on regional and national diving courses.

David married Clare Hammerton, daughter of Unknown and Unknown, on 5 Aug 1989 in St Andrews Kingswood. (Clare Hammerton was born on 10 Nov 1965.)
