Introduction

There will be major changes in the way that files will be made available this year. New format files will be available for Year 13 (GCE, VCE and IB) exams and Year 11 (GCSE) exams. Scottish Results will not be coverted to the new format this year.

A text file with tab separated columns suitable for dropping into a word processor will enable users to print copies of lists for themselves. Word Files will also be availablefor printing. These lists will contain only limited statistical information and will not be suitable for loading into spreadsheets.

There will also be csv files with data suitable for loading into spreadsheets.

The notes below refer to the structure of the csv files.

FILE NAMING CONVENTION

eg ABGTX02.csv (a csv file). The corresponding text file would be called ABGT02.txt
The name of the file is made up as follows:
The first character is one of: A - Year 13, G - GCSE or S - Scotland
Then follows some combination of B G T, indicating that the file contains results for : B - Boys, G - Girls and/or T - Totals - i.e. Boys and Girls results combined.
The following character (X in example) defines the version. MAKE SURE YOU USE CORRECT VERSION
The two subsequent digits indicate the year.

The first editions of the results files issued in August, are for the total number of candidates for each school. Files with Boys and Girls results shown separately are published no earlier than mid-September.

FIELDS

The csv file contains field names in the first line of data. The first six fields give data about the school. Subsequent fields give data about exam results.
ref: The ISC 4 digit reference number between 0002-1599
name: Usually the name of the school, but sometimes slightly modifed for the purpose of exam results.
town - the postal town of the school
county - the data in this field will normally be a county name but other areas, as customarily used by ISC, eg. Merseyside Area are sometimes used.
assoc - GSA, HMC, ISA or SHMIS
type - type of shcool B (all Boys), G (all Girls), M (Mixed),

Please note that the codes B, G, M refer to the mix of boys and girls for the exams in the list.

EXAMS

Each of the exam types recorded in the tables is allocated a three letter code which is used as part of the definitions of fields connected with exam statistics. These codes are listed here:

IHG - IB, Higher Level
ISG - IB, Standard Level
IBT - All International Baccalaureate results

GCG - Full Courses
GCS - Short Courses
GFS - Combined Full and Short Courses

Scottish
Scottish results will be published in the traditional way until time is found to upgrade to the new method.

Year 13 Candidates

Candidates for whom results are given in the tables will have sat some combination of the exams mentioned above. The numbers of candidates with results shown for various groups of exams are given next:
lcs - Candidates who took GCE A and/or GCE AS exams
gvc - Candidates who took VCE A and/or GCE AS exams
lvc - Candidates who took GCSE and/or VCE A and/or GCE AS exams
ibc - Candidates who took IB exams
Note that the total number of pupils in Year 13 is not shown explicitly. It can be assumed to be the number shown in lvc aded to the number shown in ibc, because it is assuemd that IB candidates do not also take GCE or VCE exams.

EXAM DATA FIELDS

alg - indicates the exam, see above list.
b g or t - indicates that the figures are for boys, girls or totals.
02 - year (eg 02 stands for 2002.) This two-character field is also used for averages- eg -5 indicates that averages have been calculated from results for the previous 5 years.
A - If the above code is followed by a single letter eg A, The field will contain the number of results obtained at that grade. Grade T is used for the Total number of entries.
(a GCE A-level example would be: algb02C. This is the field which contains results for boys who obtained grade C in GCE A-level in 2002)

Statistics follow the Grades
The following three letter codes describing statistics are appended to the exam description code - eg. in the example algb02
can - the number of candidates eg for the above A level exam the full name of the candidate field would be algb02can
ppc - the number of points per candidate.
ppe - the points per entry.
epc - the entries per candidate.

Please Note there that ppe and epc are replaced by pps and spc when two exam have been combined - e.g. GCE A-level and GCE AS-Level.
pps - points per subject
spc - subjects per candidate

Some additional statistics are included in the GCSE files, as follows.
n5p - the number of candidates gaining 5 or more *A-C subject passes. NB. Short courses count as half subjects.
p5p - the percentage of candidates gainign 5 or more *A-C.
pas - the percentage of subjects with results at *A (Field may be named A*)
pa - the percentage of subjects passed at grade A or better.
pb - the percentage of subjects passed at grade B or better.
pc - the percentage of subjects passed at grade C or better.
pd - the percentage of subjects passed at grade D or better.
pe - the percentage of subjects passed at grade E or better.
pf - the percentage of subjects passed at grade F or better.
pg - the percentage of subjects passed at grade G or better.
pu - the percentage of subjects passed at grade U or better.
Note that the cumulative percentages described above, will for many schools reach 100% at a grade higher than U. In these cases only the first 100% is recorded. Subsequent columns will contain blanks.

The difference between entries and subjects is that in the individual exams (eg GCSE Full courses)
Entries indicate the total number of grades awarded. However, when results for GCSE Full and Short courses are combined ONE GCSE Short Course counts for ONE entry but only HALF a GCSE subject. Similarly, and AS entry counts as half an A-level subject.
